Marietta is a city in Georgia, about 20 miles northwest of Atlanta. The population was just over 60,000 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Cobb County. Marietta was founded in 1824 as the county seat of the newly created Cobb County. The city was named for Mary Willis, wife of U.S. senator and chief justice John Marshall. Marietta was the site of several important Civil War battles, including the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain in 1864.
